Pianist and composer Jeroen van Vliet wins Buma Boy Edgarprijs 2014
The Buma Boy Edgarprijs, the most important Dutch prize for jazz and improvised music, has been awarded to pianist and composer Jeroen van Vliet. As part of the prize, Van Vliet will curate a concert night at the Bimhuis on December 14, 2014. During that occasion he will be presented with the award, consisting of a sum of €12,500 and a sculpture made by Jan Wolkers. The concert night will be broadcast live on national radio VPRO www.radio6.nl.
Jeroen van Vliet (1965) is known as a pianist and composer who intertwines his great sense of melody and harmony with adventure and experiment. He is one Holland’s most lyrical jazz pianists, a master of nuance and subtlety. During the nineties he distinguishes himself in the bands of alto saxophonist Paul van Kemenade and double bass player Eric van der Westen. During the last decade Van Vliet made a name for himself in various bands including trumpeter Eric Vloeimans’ Gatecrash. After Van Vliet’s North Sea Jazz Composition Assignment in 2008, he focuses on his own projects, solo as well as for his groups: Estafest (with violist Oene van Geel, guitarist Anton Goudsmit and saxophonist Mete Erker) and OGU (with guitarist Bram Stadhouders and drummer Etienne Nillesen). This results in rave reviews for his concerts and his CD releases.
The jury of the Buma Boy Edgarprijs praises Van Vliet for being a distinctive musician, with a unique voice in the tradition; for his ability to bridge the gaps between various genres; for his urge to invigorate jazz and his great thirst for adventure.
“Van Vliet creates music to get lost in. He is one of the few major poets of Dutch improvised music. He is a warm-hearted person, who is never tempted to make unnecessarily complicated music, but always remains faithful to his beautiful sound. And it’s in this sound that substance, dimension and depth can be found. It’s a quality that makes Van Vliet ruthlessly credible.”
“A masterful pianist with skills in various fields. His touch, and especially his lyrical approach to music and sound, make him recognizable and loved. (…) You can always feel the excitement of the moment, the love of improvisation.”
“Van Vliet’s own musical language harbours an open mind that allows him to sound convincing in realms of classical and chamber music, ambient, free improvisation, groove, electronic music and somewhat more traditional jazz.”
Finally, the jury notes that Van Vliet’s victory came about slowly during the various meetings of the jury. Emerging from an almost invisible corner, neither pushed nor advocated, his named popped up more and more in an almost casual way. Eventually he was unanimously declared the most obvious winner. This process in fact mirrors the qualities of the laureate: “Neither Van Vliet’s appearance, nor his music cry out for attention. But at the same time one feels his finesse, personality and unconditional surrender, conveyed in authentic stories, secretly taking possession of you.”
